Proposal
Purpose:
The purpose of the magazine is entertain and intrigue the consumers reading the magazine whilst meeting the client brief, the purpose of this magazine is to be based around north London, as well as engaging in the vibrant music scene. The purpose is developing local artists and letting people know about it, the idea of my magazine will be of the genre of pop and being it solely in the area of North London, the genre of pop is at its peak at the moment and creating a magazine based on this genre would be a good idea as it would capitalise on the success it is bringing.
Form:
The magazine will be a monthly magazine as it will take time to write and photograph developing artists, it will be an A4 sized magazine with between 70-100 pages depending on what the article of the magazine is mainly focused on, the paper used will be recycling paper as it is good for the environment, cheap and will give a positive ethical reputation of the magazine. the online form will be simple as it will be connected to our website, this will be easy and simple to do, and will be suitable for all types of customers.
Genre:
The genre of the magazine will be pop music, this is because it is a very well known and influential style of music, it entitles us to aim at a large market audience as this genre is heavily popular it will allow us to have a higher chance of selling the magazine and becoming an in-demand and desired magazine.
Content:
The content will give us an USP, as it will differentiate us form our competitors, the content will include articles which will be: interviews and Q/As with upcoming artists, interactive mechanics, facts and others. The interactive mechanics will be giving us our USP as it will let the consumer interact with upcoming artists as well as the magazine, a way that we will look at doing this is by having codes that will allow consumers to listen to a short part of the songs written by upcoming artists, as well as that the interviews and Q/As will give the upcoming artists a big push by letting consumer know about the artists as well as giving the consumer some ideas about the artist in question.
Target Audience:
The magazine's primary target audience will be of young female teenagers of any race or ethnicity, coming from a low-medium income, this is because teenage girls are going to be more interested in pop music because of the artists and the music they create, this will mean that we are aiming that a high percentage of our sales will come from female consumers. The magazine's secondary target audience will be of young female adults from the ages of 18-27 form any ethnicity or race, this is because females are going to be interested in this however older women will not be as interested in this as young teen women as they are more connected to this genre of music than older people. The magazine's tertiary target audience will be of young male adults aged between 15-23 with any form of race or ethnicity, from a low-medium income, this is our tertiary target audience as we don't expect men to be as interested in this as females, however we do expect some of our sales to go towards consumers that are male as the genre of pop is also influential to men and impact them as well.
Resources and Personnel:
Resources:
- Camera- to take photographs of the artists
- photoshop- to crop and make the photographs better
- computer or laptop- this is for the photoshop
- printer- to print out the pages for the magazine
- tripod- to help the camera stay stable when taking photographs
- Photographer- to take photos of the artists and other images we need
- photo editor- to edit the photos using photoshop
- proofreaders- to make sure that the articles written are grammatically correct
- marketer- research the market, including essentials about competitors and our possible consumers
- journalist- to write down and create the articles or stories for the magazine
The magazine's primary method of distributing the magazines will be paperback, it will be sold in shops around North London, we will aim to distribute them to shops of high standards and gain a lot of footfall, the majority of shops and markets we aim to sell to are one such as Sainsbury's and Tesco's just to name a couple, the pricing will be £4.99, it is will a monthly magazine and we believe that the pricing on this is fair the consumers and well as us, our secondary method will be online subscriptions, this is because everything can be found online as therefore putting the magazine out there will be important to get the magazine out there and known, the pricing will be the same at £4.99 however for £5.99, and only online, consumers can get extra information and articles, this is important as if the consumer is enjoying reading the magazine, increasing the price by a small amount will not affect the consumers.
Marketing methods:
Our methods of marketing include: publicity, advertisements, promotions.
The way we will try and publicise our magazine is at events and going 'word of mouth' this is important to the magazine as it will give knowledge of the magazine to the public which will gain attention for the magazine which will hopefully gain the magazine sales, this will be mostly likely in North London as this is where the magazine is going to be based.
Advertisements are important, and will come form adverts and billboards, this is because these two forms of advertisements are the most likely to grab the attention of possible consumers, as the majority of people will be watching tv and will be seeing these adverts, as well as this, billboard are big and therefore going to grab the publics attention with it, as well another form of advertisement will be paid advertisements, this is where we will pay to have our magazine written about in magazines or newspapers to gain a more non-verbal 'word of mouth'. The advertisements on TV will be at a wider audience as it can't be just for North London TV watchers, this is good for as well because it also gives out details of the magazine to wider audiences not just located in North London
Promotions are important as they give a primary reason for possible consumers to purchase and read the magazine, as consumers will want the promotions that would be offered, such as posters, free music, free tickets and more, this entices possible consumers to buy the magazine, furthermore identifying why promotions is a key asset to marketing our magazine, the promotions will only be on the first few magazines as we aim to gain loyal and returning consumers within the first few issues of the magazine.
Sample materials:
Title of magazine with font:
The title if the magazine will be called Pop-ular music, this is because as is rolls of the tongue and is rememberable, it also links to the style of magazine and the genre chosen, as the genre chosen is pop, this all links together and will make the title stand out against competitors since it is simple and slick and easy to remember. The font chosen is Kelvinized, the reason I have chosen this font style is because it is big and bold and is my opinion really stands out, this is important as it is critical to stand out amongst competitors, and will connect with other styles of fonts used in other parts of the magazine.
Font Styles:
As I said above the masthead will use the font of Kelvinized for the reasons that will also come with the reasonings of the other fonts.
Headlines:
The font used for the headlines is going to be ChunkFive Ex, this is because it is similar to the masthead and will give the headlines the stand out required; since they are headlines. This will be an obvious case for headlines to be big and bold like the masthead since its the main stories or articles that the headlines will be covering, this will further give the magazine a different look since it will bold which will draw potential consumers attentions.
Body-copies and Coverlines:
The font that is going to be used for both body-copies and coverlines are going to be fragment core, this because, these two written parts of the magazine should be simple and easy to read, this font meets the requirements I want for these, it isn't important for these to stand out specifically as it would be the masthead and the headlines that will be doing the majority for the magazine to stand out, while the font chosen for this is spread out, meaning that words are easily depicted and easily understood by the readers.
Article Ideas:
- Interviews- interviews are a great part to have in a magazine, especially as we are trying to develop unknown talent, this is a great way to get to know the artists and give them a push they need, as well as this, not many magazines will be willing to put interviews with unknown artists in the magazine making this a USP for us.
- Q/As- this is also a great idea to have in a magazine, it is slight different from an interview as we would be getting questions form potential consumers, which will give a boost to the developing artists, this is also a USP for us since not many top magazines will give places in the magazine to developing unknown talents.
- Interactive Mechanics- this is a good idea to have, since the magazine will be giving back something to the consumer, this is a USP as not many magazines will have interactive objectives, as well this the interactive mechanics could include; prizes, sections of album music and other potential ideas, this will be seen as a promotional idea and will be more likely to encourage potential consumers into purchasing the products.
Colour scheme ideas:
I have chosen the colours blue, dark pink and gold as my main colour pallet. I didn't want to choose stereotypical pinks because I want my magazine to be original and a direct competitor - whilst still appealing to my target audience. The colour gold connotes royalty and wealth, which typically does link to the rap genre. The dark pink and dark blue are more stereotypical colours of Pop, which have been chosen as we don't want to stray too much from the genre and confuse our audience.
In this moodboard, it has pictures of the front covers of competitors, from the 'we love pop',again front cover it shows that it is kept the same as the different front covers of the issues are similar in the way it is presented, as well that, the body-copies and coverless, are also similar, which is good for the competitors as they keep it simple, as well as that the photographs are in similar positions, that gives us the idea that keeping our front cover the same is a good way to look at it as it keeps things simple, another competitor is 'top of the pop', this magazine varies is the way it presents its masthead, coverless, headlines and body-copies, which gives it a USP as it gives different approaches to stand out, as well as this the different issues have different colour schemes which influences the way it stand out, the colour scheme also gives it a USP as the colour changes work with the different images making the front cover look better. The other competitor is 'pop weekly' the magazine looks quite bland, although it has more separate images than the other magazines, the USP seems to be its colour scheme, as their is no characteristics as it is just black and red, which include the images which are black, this gives it a different look depending on perspective, this also doesn't seem to be one of our biggest threats or competitors. The other two magazines, are modernised with vibrant colours, especially in the fashion choices as well as how they look, these images taken of them are influential in the way potential consumers look at music and how the act towards it, making sure everything on the cover is modern and up to date is important as it will be relevant and more likely to be purchased.
The way I believe this magazine will be better is the fact that, we will look at the competitors and see how the colour scheme, fashion choices and the way the images look, will impact how the front cover looks and how it is looked out by a consumers point of view, the magazine's USP which will differentiate it form competitors will come from a few things such as colour scheme, as shown form the competitors is very important and can make the front cover look better, the fashion is also important as it could bring in sponsorships is the magazine does well, as well as this; the way the artists look or how the images look will need to be on point as we want the images to really interact with the potential consumers.
