Generating ideas (P1, M1: U21)

learning outcome 1 (u21): be able to generate ideas for an original media product based on a client brief (p1, m1)

Client requirements:
I have been asked by a client to produce a magazine front cover and double page spread for North London, to showcase the talent and reflect the vibrant music scene developing locally. There are several client requirements that I must meet:

Explicit:
  • front cover
  • double page spread
  • plan and deliver a pitch
  • North London based
  • music based magazine
Implicit:
  • sample materials/ideas
  • range of mediums
  • evidence to show progress and development of production in the production stages
Open to Interpretation:
  • range of mediums
  • photographs
  • written notes
First thoughts:
  1. One idea would be genre based with the double page spread having interviews.
  2. My second idea would be based around artists with the double page spread having interviews and Q&'s from them and readers.
  3. My third choice would be based around venue with the double page spread having interviews with venue owners and writing different reviews about the venues.
Key Ideas:

The first idea, the genre would be pop as it is very popular in north London, it would be aimed at teens primarily and adults secondly as target audiences the price would be £4.99 and would be a monthly magazine, the content would include: interviews, posters and interesting facts. aimed at caucasian girls medium income that are english, content will include tour dates.  this meets the brief as pop music as a genre is a vibrant music that people need to know about.

The second idea would be around artists, which there is a lot of in north London, it would be aimed at teens primary and adults secondly as target audiences, the price would be £4.99 and be a monthly magazine, the content would include: interviews, posters, and facts about the artists. aimed a girls that are caucasian who are english and on medium income, content includes album reviews. this links to the brief as this music scene is for developing local music artists that people need to know about.

The third idea, is the venues, which there is many of in north London, it would be primarily aimed at young adults and secondly at older adults as target audiences, it would cost £4.99 and be a monthly magazine, the content would include: venue dates and when they will be used, interviews with the owners and posters. aimed at caucasian girls that have medium income and are english, content includes technical behind the scenes information. this links to the brief as it links to north London where the brief specifically asked for the magazine to be located.

Strengthes vs weaknesses

Idea 1: Pop Magazine

Idea 2: Artists

Idea 3: Venues

Conclusion:
I will choose genre of pop as it has the ability to give out a lot of content and be successful, even though there will be a lot of competitors i believe that i'll be able to differentiate this magazine and give it a USP in comparison to competitors, the differentiation will come from the content, pricing and colour scheme which will help it stand out and make it a successful magazine in the industry. This magazine will be linked to the brief by aiming at consumers of pop music in north London and artists from north London encouraging upbringing of unknown artists.
